What is old-school bodybuilding clothing?

Old-school bodybuilding clothing is inspired by the golden era of strength training, with wide-cut stringer tank tops, fitted muscle T-shirts and cotton fabrics instead of shiny polyester. The look became famous in the legendary gyms of Venice Beach and is designed to highlight hard-earned muscle definition. At Gym Generation, we combine this classic bodybuilding aesthetic with modern fits and clean construction.

What materials are used in your bodybuilding clothing?

Most of our bodybuilding clothing is made from pure cotton or a cotton-polyester blend. Our stringers and muscle T-shirts use 100% cotton for an authentic old-school feel, while our hoodies and gym pants use a durable 80/20 cotton blend. Cotton is soft, shape-retaining and long-lasting—the fabric that defines genuine bodybuilding gymwear.

Which fit should I choose: muscle fit or oversized?

That depends on the look and feel you prefer. Muscle-fit clothing sits close to the body and highlights the chest, shoulders and arms, making it ideal for showing your definition. Oversized and wide-cut old-school styles offer a looser fit and greater freedom of movement during training. Many bodybuilders wear both depending on the workout and their mood.

Who is bodybuilding clothing designed for?

Bodybuilding clothing is designed for anyone who takes strength training seriously, from beginners to experienced athletes. The fits provide freedom of movement while highlighting your physique. Whether you are performing heavy compound lifts, working on an aesthetic physique or wearing it casually, this gymwear is made for guys who live the bodybuilding lifestyle.

Are stringers and muscle shirts the same?

No. A stringer has very narrow straps and deep-cut armholes that expose more of the shoulders, back and arms. It is the classic bodybuilding tank top for maximum ventilation and freedom of movement. A muscle shirt provides more coverage and has wider shoulder straps, while still using a fitted cut to highlight the upper body. Both are staples of old-school bodybuilding clothing.

Can bodybuilding clothing also be worn casually?

Yes. Muscle T-shirts, oversized gym shirts and hoodies work just as well on the street as they do in the gym. Clean colours, athletic cuts and controlled branding make them easy to wear every day. Bodybuilding clothing can be a lifestyle statement, not just a workout outfit.

How quickly is bodybuilding clothing delivered in Switzerland?

We are a Swiss gym brand and ship directly from our own warehouse in Switzerland. Orders are usually delivered within 1–3 working days and are carefully prepared before being dispatched as quickly as possible.

How should I care for my bodybuilding clothing?

Wash your bodybuilding clothing at a maximum of 30°C using a mild detergent and allow it to air-dry instead of using a tumble dryer. Turn printed garments inside out before washing to help protect the design. This preserves the fit, colour and fabric through many training sessions.

Men’s Bodybuilding Clothing – Old-School Gymwear

Bodybuilding Clothing in Oldschool Style – the Golden Era, Reimagined

The golden era of bodybuilding had a look you recognise instantly: loose tank tops, body-hugging muscle shirts and cotton that looks like real training. In the legendary gyms around Venice Beach, a style was born that still shapes how strength sport feels today.

That's exactly the spirit our bodybuilding clothing brings into the here and now – not as a costume, but as honest gym wear for men who train hard and know where the sport comes from. Oldschool aesthetics, combined with modern cuts, clean construction and materials made for training.

If you're looking for bodybuilding clothes that do more than carry a logo, you're in the right place. Every piece is built to show the shape you've worked hard for while still giving you full freedom of movement – in the gym, on the training floor and on the way into everyday life.

Cotton as the Base – a Real Oldschool Feel

Most of our bodybuilding apparel is made from pure cotton or a rugged cotton blend. That's no accident – it's a deliberate choice. The legends of the golden era didn't wear shiny polyester jerseys; they wore heavy cotton tanks that gained more character with every session.

Cotton sits soft on the skin, feels natural and fits this honest oldschool look perfectly. Our stringers and muscle tees in 100% cotton give you exactly that authentic feel on the body.

For hoodies and pants we mostly use a cotton-polyester blend, often 80/20. That keeps the cotton character while giving the pieces a bit more durability and shape retention. For especially sweaty sessions, our Aesthetic Gym Shorts add lightweight polyester models with a mesh liner – a deliberate quick-drying exception for heat, cardio and summer training.

Muscle-Fit or Oversized – the Right Cut for Your Look

Bodybuilding clothing lives and dies by the cut. At Gym Generation you'll find both worlds: close-to-body fits that show your shape, and looser oldschool cuts that bring that classic gym vibe.

The muscle fits sit tighter, emphasise chest, shoulders and arms and put your definition clearly on display. That's the right call when you want to show what you've built.

The looser oldschool cuts and oversized pieces sit more relaxed, give you more freedom of movement and nail the classic Venice Beach look. On chest, shoulder or back days especially, this cut feels right, because nothing restricts you.

Our stringers with a deep armhole are the strongest expression of this look: a free shoulder line, good ventilation and uncompromisingly built for aesthetics.

Bodybuilding Apparel for Your Whole Training Week

Our bodybuilding clothes cover everything you need in the gym and around training. You'll find stringer tank tops in 100% cotton with prints that stand for something – from "Veni Vidi Vici" and the Spartan helmet to "No Pain No Gain".

Alongside them are gym tank tops and muscle tees for anyone who wants a bit more fabric than a stringer but keeps the body-hugging look. Oversized shirts bring the relaxed oldschool vibe. Hoodies in a cotton blend see you through cold days, warm-ups or the walk to the gym.

For your lower half, you'll find matching training pants and shorts that don't get in the way of leg work and round off the look cleanly. All in clean colours and with the branding that defines Gym Generation – visible, but never overloaded.

Bodybuilding Is More Than Training

For you, strength sport is more than a hobby: discipline, hard sets, repetition, building. Your bodybuilding clothing should show exactly that, not hide it.

Our collection is made for beginners just as much as for experienced athletes – for anyone who takes the training floor seriously and shows what they stand for in everyday life too. From your first real stringer to the hoodie you wear for years: this is strength-sport apparel with attitude, not a short-lived trend.

Looking for the full outfit? Pair a stringer with gym shorts for training day, or an oversized hoodie with long joggers for the way to the gym. You'll find more pants, shirts and hoodies in their own categories.

Bodybuilding Clothing by Gym Generation

We know the gym from the inside. Since 2013 we've been developing apparel for people who really train – which is why we know what a stringer has to withstand and how a muscle tee should sit.

More than 60,000 customers, a rating of 4.7/5 from over 1,000 reviews and three appearances at FIBO in Cologne stand for bodybuilding apparel with substance instead of empty promises. As a Swiss brand, we ship directly from our own Swiss warehouse, usually within 1–3 business days.
