Frequently Asked Questions about Lifting Straps, Gym Straps & Grips

What do lifting straps do for strength training?

Lifting straps shift the limiting factor from your grip to your large muscle groups. On deadlifts, pull-ups or rows, your grip often gives out before your back and lats are fully worked. Gym straps stabilise the connection to the bar, so you hit more reps and heavier loads — the training stimulus lands where it belongs. No trick, just smart load redistribution for more effective strength work.

What's the difference between lifting straps, gym straps and lifting grips?

"Grip support" is the umbrella category for tools that help secure your hold during heavy pulling exercises. Classic lifting straps are made from rugged cotton and wrap around the bar — flexible, versatile, and often called gym straps. Lifting grips use a non-slip rubber pad that you attach and release in seconds, ideal for fast set changes. Steel hook straps are built for maximum loads, while padded models add neoprene wrist support. The right pick depends on how you train.

Which lifting straps are best for me?

It depends on your training style. For beginners and all-rounders, classic cotton lifting straps with extra grip are ideal — non-slip, versatile, from CHF 22. For very heavy loads, shrugs and rack pulls, choose straps with steel hooks that take over most of the holding work. For fast set changes, lifting grips with a rubber pad are perfect. For sensitive wrists, pick gym wrist straps with neoprene wrist support; for a refined, no-rub feel, the leather version.

Are there lifting straps for women?

Yes. Our straps with extra grip also come in Pink and Light Pink, plus a women's set with wrist support in black and pink. The function is identical to every other model — non-slip grip and a secure wrist loop — just in matching colours and with a fit that holds on slimmer wrists too. So women get the same grip support on deadlifts, rows and pull-ups as everyone else.

Do lifting straps weaken your grip strength?

Only if you wear them on every single exercise. Use lifting straps deliberately on heavy pulling work and train your grip alongside — with dead hangs or farmer's walks, for example — and you'll actually build grip strength. The skill is in switching consciously: gym straps are a tool for targeted stimulus, not a permanent crutch. Leave them off during warm-ups and technique work to keep loading your forearms.

Lifting straps or gym gloves — which is better?

They solve different problems. Gym gloves mainly protect against blisters and calluses but do little for grip strength. Lifting straps and grips, on the other hand, directly reinforce your hold and let you train heavier and longer. Anyone moving maximum loads on deadlifts or rows reaches for straps or grips. Many athletes combine both depending on the goal — gloves for comfort, lifting straps for performance.

How do you put on lifting straps correctly?

Loop the strap snugly around your wrist and wrap the free end once or twice tightly around the bar. Build tension before you grip the bar, lock in your hold, then start the lift. Models with steel hooks skip the wrapping — you simply hook them under the bar. With lifting grips, you clamp the rubber pad between hand and bar. Test different wraps to find your optimal hold.

Which exercises are lifting straps good for?

Lifting straps help on all pulling movements with moderate to heavy load: deadlifts, pull-ups, barbell rows, T-bar rows, shrugs and cable work. Anywhere your grip tires before the target muscle, gym straps get more out of the set. On pressing and isolation work or in the warm-up you don't need them — there, grip isn't the limiting factor. For cable leg work, there are separate ankle straps.

Collection: Lifting Straps & Gym Straps – Maximize Your Grip on Heavy Lifts

Lifting Straps & Gym Straps by Gym Generation

In heavy strength training, your back rarely gives out first — your grip does. On deadlifts, barbell rows or pull-ups, your hands and forearms fatigue long before your larger muscle groups are anywhere near done. That's where lifting straps and gym straps come in: they take the load off your grip on deadlifts, pull-ups and rows, so you can truly work your back and lats — not just your forearms. More reps, more weight, and a stronger stimulus from every set.

What Sets Our Lifting Straps Apart

We build training gear that lasts — no thin bands that fray after a few weeks. Our classic lifting straps are made from rugged cotton around 5 cm wide, with a non-slip grip print that holds even with sweaty hands. The padded models add a neoprene wrist loop that prevents pressure points. Every model is built for thousands of reps — a small investment that carries you through years of training.

Six Models for Every Training Style

Not every strap suits every athlete — which is why we carry six distinct models:

  • Straps with Extra Grip — the classic cotton lifting straps and a versatile all-rounder for deadlifts, rows, pull-ups and shrugs. In six colours, from All Black to Pink. From CHF 22
  • Gym Straps with Wrist Support — cotton with neoprene padding and integrated wrist support, ideal for sensitive wrists. Also available as a women's set in pink. CHF 25
  • Straps with Steel Hooks — the hook takes over the holding work entirely, no wrapping needed. For maximum loads, shrugs and rack pulls. CHF 29
  • Power Grips with Rubber Pad — a non-slip pad instead of a wrap, on and off in seconds. Perfect for supersets and fast set changes. CHF 29
  • Leather Lifting Straps — genuine leather, extra strong, with a refined grip and no abrasion. For advanced athletes in powerlifting and bodybuilding. CHF 25
  • Ankle Straps — padded ankle cuffs with a D-ring for cable work on glutes and legs. CHF 19

Lifting Straps for Women

A strong grip is not a gender issue. Our straps with extra grip also come in Pink and Light Pink, plus a women's set with wrist support — same function, same hold, in a fit that sits securely on slimmer wrists too. So you get full support on deadlifts, rows and pull-ups.

Which Lifting Straps Are Right for You?

For getting started and classic gym training, the cotton straps with extra grip are the right call. If you move maximum loads, reach for steel hooks or leather. For functional training and fast transitions, the power grips are ideal. Need wrist support too? The padded gym wrist straps have you covered.
