Berserkers and Wolf Warriors in the Sources

The Old Norse sources describe warriors who fell into a frenzy before battle – numb to pain, without cover, without retreat. The word itself points to their clothing: it is read as “bear shirt”, and their counterparts, the úlfhéðnar, wore wolf pelts. That's why this design has no helmet but an animal hood pulled over the head, ears laid back. The beard beneath runs out in dozens of single strands, the face is covered in knotwork, the mouth open. It's not a historical reconstruction; it shows the figure as today's Norse imagery depicts it.

Soft PVC with Raised Lines

The design is made almost entirely of fine lines: beard strands, knotwork, teeth, the characters in the base bar. Thread has a minimum width – embroidered, these lines would run into each other and the drawing would end up as a grey mass. In soft PVC the design is moulded: every line stands raised above the black base, with a clean edge and a relief you can feel. There is a practical side too: the surface is closed. Sweat, rain and dust have no fabric to settle into, and a damp cloth is all it takes.

Red on Black, Portrait Format

The black base is matte, the red has a slight sheen – that difference brings out the drawing even in diffuse light, without the patch looking garish. Unlike the usual 8 × 5 cm landscape format, the berserker stands upright: 6 cm wide, 9 cm high. On a standard loop panel it fills the height instead of covering just a strip, and next to landscape patches it sets a vertical counterpoint.

Hook Backing for Loop Surfaces

The back is fully covered with hook tape and grips any loop field: MOLLE backpacks with a loop panel, gym bags with a patch panel, caps with a loop front, vests and jackets. Berserker Patch FAQ

Is the patch embroidered or rubber?
Soft PVC. The design is moulded and stands in relief above the base – no thread, no stitching in the design. Fine lines stay sharp, and the surface is water-repellent and wipeable.

Did Vikings wear horned helmets?
No. No helmet found from the Viking Age has horns; the image only emerged in the 19th century through opera and painting. What rises from the head on this patch are the ears of the animal hood – closer to what the sources say about berserkers and wolf warriors than any horned helmet.

Does PVC hold up in cold and wet conditions?
Yes. Soft PVC stays flexible, absorbs no water and doesn't swell. Rain and snow do no harm, and the colour fades far more slowly than on a printed textile patch.

Does the patch hold on any bag?
Only on surfaces with a loop counterpart. It won't stick to smooth fabric without a loop panel – self-adhesive loop tape can be added there.
