Vegvísir from the 1860 Huld Manuscript

Vegvísir is Icelandic for “wayfinder”. The sign belongs to the galdrastafir, the magical staves of Icelandic folk magic. Its first known record is the Huld Manuscript, compiled by Geir Vigfússon in Akureyri in 1860 – around 800 years after the end of the Viking Age. It holds the only surviving line on what the sign does: whoever carries it will not lose their way in storms or bad weather, even on a route they don't know. The popular name “Viking compass” came later. The idea behind it still holds: keep your course when you can't see ahead.

Is the Vegvísir a genuine Viking symbol?
No, not in the historical sense. The earliest known depiction comes from the Icelandic Huld Manuscript of 1860. The sign appears nowhere on rune stones, in grave finds or in the sagas. It belongs to 19th-century Icelandic folk magic, not Norse mythology – “Viking compass” is a modern name for a much younger symbol.

What does the outer ring show?
A continuous band of runic characters that encircles the Vegvísir stave and frames the central design. It's part of the patch artwork.

Velcro patch or sew-on patch?
A Velcro patch, also known as a morale patch. The back is the hook side and sticks straight to any loop surface. No sewing, ironing or gluing. It won't hold on smooth fabric without a loop counterpart – there, you can add a self-adhesive loop panel.

Does the white stay clean?
Light thread shows dirt sooner than dark. Because the patch is removable, you can wipe it on its own with a damp cloth instead of putting the whole backpack through the machine. Remove it every time you wash your gear.
